What is it about?
The trade of illicit goods, from counterfeits to gray goods, continues to cause significant economic losses for IPR holders and jeopardize consumer safety and health (OECD/EUIPO 2016 «Trade in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods – Mapping the Economic Impact»).
Public authorities have consistently expressed their intention to stop counterfeiting by tightening controls and increasing penalties, such that there is today a comprehensive legal arsenal to combat IPR violations.
Despite this, the phenomenon of counterfeiting, amplified by e-commerce, appears far from being brought under control. The issue is perhaps not so much the deficiency of the legal framework as the timely detection of counterfeits and the identification of their origin.
Could new technologies in the area of traceability, and specifically blockchain technology, provide an effective response to the "scourge" of counterfeiting?
Mr. Matthieu Hug, Founder and CEO of Tilkal, a platform for transparency and end-to-end traceability using blockchain technology, will join us for a breakfast debate to address the following questions:
- What is blockchain technology?
- What guarantees of authenticity and origin can it provide?
- What applications in terms of product traceability but also transparency, both in the virtual world of e-commerce and in traditional distribution channels?
This meeting will be an opportunity for participants to ask all their questions about blockchain technology and discuss the concrete issues they face in the fight against counterfeiting and more generally in supply chain management.
Participation in this event is free.
