Rudolf Teschemacher

Rudolf Teschemacher is a recognized expert in all matters of procedural and substantive law relating to the European Patent Convention. His work currently focusses on the Unitary Patent and the Unitary Patent Court, a topic on which he regularly lectures and produces publications.
Rudolf Teschemacher has held important positions at the European Patent Office since the Office’s early days. As Director Patent Law, he was responsible for advising examiners, EPO top management and users of the European patent system on how to apply European patent law. In his years as a permanent member of the Enlarged Board of Appeal, he drafted landmark decisions such as Novartis relating to the patentability of plants or PPG and Genetic Systems relating to the admissibility of disclaimers. Rudolf Teschemacher’s activities on the Technical Boards of Appeal mainly related to chemistry and, although he was a legally qualified member of the boards, he became chairman of a Technical Board of Appeal in the field of Chemistry. However, he also worked in other technical fields, particularly mechanical engineering.

Publications
In addition to the above activities, he has also made many contributions to the development of European patent law with his publications, the most prominent of which being the commentaries on the EPC Singer/Stauder and Münchner Gemeinschaftskommentar, which he co-authored.
