Mechanical Engineering

Wording patent applications for inventions in the field of mechanical engineering requires a particular ability to define technology in words. In many cases, there is no generally accepted terminology relating to a particular mechanical invention. On the other hand, if accepted terminology exists, the use of such terminology may limit the patent’s scope of protection unduly, because some of these words may imply additional features that are not required to protect the invention. In some cases, it may be appropriate to use functional wording in the application to give the patent a broad scope of protection.

Our patent attorneys not only have detailed knowledge of German and European case law setting out the limits of functional wording, but are also familiar with, in some cases conflicting, legal opinions in other countries, for example in the USA. Our patent attorneys’ technical expertise in relation to patent infringement cases in the field of mechanical engineering ensure that patent applications are drafted with particular accuracy and that your invention enjoys the best possible scope of protection.
