Stefan Steinbrener has many years’ experience as an examiner and supervisor in German and European examination and opposition proceedings, particularly in the fields of semiconductor and display technology.

Drawing on his university research, Dr. Steinbrener dealt with ex parte and inter partes appeal proceedings (primarily in the field of optics) as a member of Board of Appeal 3.4.02 (Physics II) of the European Patent Office. When appointed chairman of Board of Appeal 3.5.01 (Electricity I), his field of practice shifted to telecommunications and computer technology, and increasingly to hardware and software aspects of computer-implemented inventions. Under his chairmanship, Board of Appeal 3.5.01 made a fundamental contribution to the established case law in this field.
