Patent litigation and patent prosecution. Udo Altenburg has represented clients in many opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office since its early days in 1978. Proceedings at the EPO as well as national validity proceedings at the Federal Patent Court and the Federal Supreme Court are handled in close cooperation with the attorneys-at-law of the firm representing the clients in parallel infringement cases. A particular challenge of many cases is the coordination with related international patent litigation, in particular in the US.
Udo Altenburg has many years of experience in a number of technical fields ranging from medical devices (e.g. stents, catheters, dialyzers) to measurement technologies such as spectroscopy, photogrammetry and NMR imaging, as well as aspects of material science. Other cases related to classical mechanical engineering (rolling mills, automotive technology) and consumer goods such as sports equipment.
Asia, particularly Japan and China, are a specific interest of Udo Altenburg, who has visited these countries more than 40 times and intensively promoted the business development of the firm with clients from this part of the world.
Udo Altenburg was one of the founders of the firm in 1977 and the originator of the concept of bringing patent attorneys and attorneys-at-law together in one law firm partnership of "Patent- und Rechtsanwälte". He was Managing Partner of the firm for most of the time since its foundation until 2005. Last but not least, Udo Altenburg is the "maître de plaisir" of many social events for which the firm is well-known in the international IP community.
